Tad Simmons and the physicists and engineering technicians on the team at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) developed this “real-time” or instant x-ray system. Tad incorporated a number of new technologies including a scintillator and a glass thin-film transistor array (basically a pane of glass with several million pixel detectors on it) inside a custom aluminum case, connected to custom integrated circuits via custom flex-circuit carriers.  The flex circuit carriers were bonded to circuit contacts on both ends and carried the image signal off the panel, converted it to digital information, and delivered it to an on-board processor.  The package requirements demanded a very low profile and significant signal & noise management within each module inside the single flat panel case.
